Korea Presents Final Bid for 2022 World Cup

Korea, along with Australia, Japan, the US, and Qatar, are bidding to host the 2022 World Cup.  Voting on this begins today in Zurich, following a presentation featuring swimmer Park Tae-hwan, soccer player Park Ji-sung, and ballerina Kang Sue-jin.  They were accompanied by the current and former prime minister of Korea, the current vice president of FIFA, and the chairman of the bidding committee.

Up for the 2018 vote are the UK, Russia, Spain-Portugal, and the Netherlands-Belgium.

I am curious how the recent heighening of tensions on the Korean peninsula will impact FIFA's executive committee vote for 2022.  Granted, the date is still 12 years away, but I bet that this issue is on at least one committee member's mind.

What do you think?  Would Korea be a viable, safe host for the 2022 World Cup?  Please feel free to post your thoughts in the comments.

  3. I think the decisions that the committee came to in the end were really strange, and probably equally strange in motivation.
